The Carter IV by Lil Wayne

02 Nov

Arguably one of the most anticipated Hip-Hop Albums this year, “The Carter IV” has finally arrived. Marred by numerous postponements, a song leak here and there and not to mention Lil’ Wayne’s 8 month prison saga, “Carter IV” was initially predicted to sell between 250 000-350 000 copies in its first week. To those familiar with Lil’ Wayne’s work it would be a considerable failure in comparison to his previous album “The Carter III”. Which went platinum (a million copies sold or more) in its first week and has up to date gone triple platinum.

“The Carter IV”, however, was not to be underestimated, within four days of its release (29TH August), “The Carter IV” had sold more than 300 000 copies, overtaking “Watch the Throne” (Jay-z and Kanye West’s duo album) on the iTunes sales list. “The Carter IV” went on to sell a total of 964 000 copies in its first week and just barely missing the platinum mark. Had “The Carter IV” gone platinum, Lil’ Wayne would have been the first artist to release back to back platinum albums, concreting his position as “the best rapper alive”.

In terms of quality, “The Carter IV” did not fail to impress, featuring the likes of Andre 3000, Drake, Big Bun, Nas, Tech N9ne, Jadakiss, Cory Gunz, Shyne, Busta Rhymes, John Legend, Bruno Mars and Rick Ross. The most notable tracks are “Nightmares of The Bottom”, “She Will” feat. Drake, “Megaman”, “President Carter” and “Its Good” feat Drake and Jadakiss, in which Weezy unleashes a few ferocious lines against Jay-z.

“Baby money/ Talk about baby money/ I got your baby money/ kidnap your bitch get that how much you love your lady money”,

this was in response to Jay-z’s

“really you got baby money”

line in his single H.A.M feat Kanye West (“Baby” referring to Lil Wayne’s mentor Birdman who occasionally calls himself “Baby”).

I was generally impressed by Weezy’s style of rap, much more aggressive than the style he used in “The Carter III”. Most fans would agree that he has returned to his “mixtape” style of rap which was widely accepted by his fan base. While some of the beats may sound rather repetitive and familiar each song is certainly different from the other with regard to lyrical content. The song types range from RnB to Hip-Hop and Hard rap.

It seems that Lil Wayne has certainly delivered and has left his mark on the music industry. He has also been commended for his song “How to Love” by the likes of Stevie Wonder and fellow rappers Big Sean, Kanye West, Rick Ross and Drake, who are known to appraise his talent in their own songs. All in all I would definitely recommend this album to anyone looking for a good quality rapper in an over saturated game.
